H. O. Lund 1932-1975
H.O. Lund serves as an instructor of entomology until 1938 when he becomes an assistant professor in the department of Zoology until 1942, when he takes a leave of absence to enlist in the U.S. Navy, as a Lieutenant Commander and Malaria Control Office. Following the war (1946), he returned to UGA as a professor of entomology. (Biography, UGA Ephemera Collection UGA Archives).
Prior to the war, he spent summers (1939-1941) working on malaria control in south Georgia for the Georgia Health Department. In 1936, Lund organized the first insect collection at UGA for research purposes. https://site.caes.uga.edu/ugca/history/
He was a charter member of the Georgia Entomological Society. In 1939, he was elected an AAAS Fellow. He also served as chairman of the Division of Biological Sciences, 1950-1954, and then founded and became head of the Department of Entomology (1954). He was part of the Barclay McGhee and A. B. Weathersby 1970 training grant in malariology.
Upon his retirement in 1975, a proclamation by the governor set an official “Horace O. Lund Day”. He was also recognized in the Congressional Record (November 18, 1983) of the U.S. Congress for his service to entomology in Georgia. https://doi.org/10.1093/ae/36.3.242
