The Department of Bacteriology is established

In 1952, the Department of Bacteriology is established as its own department. Since the war years, bacteriology had been part of the Division of Biological Sciences without its own leadership structure. The department was tasked with overseeing all bacteriology courses and research on campus, which included programs in the College of Agriculture and the College of Veterinary Medicine. A year later, they will request a name change to the Department of Microbiology as recognition of the expanding discipline. It would include all “small” organisms such as viruses, bacteria, mold, fungi, algae, and protozoa.
